SPL Description
Each and every Wednesday for the past two and a half years, I have volunteered at a place called Common Cup. This is a weekly meal prepared by a group of ladies of the Faith Community United Methodist Church.. The church located at 100 Country Club Drive in Xenia, OH. This meal is prepared primarily for the residents of Xenia and the surrounding areas at a very inexpensive price. The food is home cooked meals. There are other churches prepares meals in the area, but I choose to work at Common Cup. They people of the church who volunteer there are awesome people. I have seen firsthand how an organization organizes this tremendous event. The dedication of these people is tremendous and I am proud to be a part of it. The people of the church have taught me so much. I get to see and be a part of everything that goes on. They have given me the desire to want to volunteer and serve my community.
I choose this project because of the people, their hearts are so big. They are such a caring group of people and I want to be like them and serve my community. It is a great feeling of pride. The caring nature of these people, are a very big inspirations to me. I have a strong desire to continue serving.
I feel this is what God wants me to do and these people of this church have been put in my life so that I may discover my gift of sharing and volunteering.
One very big reason I do this is because of a special lady that came to Common Cup. I saw her enter the door on her cane. She looked very sad and alone. I walked up to her and introduced myself and told her that I would help her. She agreed and I found her a table with a lady sitting all along. I introduced them and left to get her dinner for her. I continued helping other people while the two ladies talked and ate their meal. After awhile, I looked up and saw them laughing and talking. When she was ready to leave I helped her out to her car. She explained to me that she had lost her husband a year ago. She was very lonely and her son and daughter lived out of state. Someone told her about Common Cup and she decided to give it a try. She told me that she enjoyed herself so much. She hadn’t felt like that in a long time. I was her angel. I gave her happiness again. As I walked back into the church, my eyes tearing, I felt the greatest feeling of accomplishing what I came to Common Cup for. Serving and helping people. The ladies’ name is Lydia and I am proud to call her my friend.
